Group Assignment 1: Innovating a New Kitchenware in a Team Setting(revision)

Assignment 1:
We are group 7. In order to find some relationship between trust and creativity when having  teamwork , we totally done the "simulation work" .After we done the exercise A1 and A2, we really find something interesting.
When we do the EX. A1,our team will quickly reach an agreement because they don't have redundant steps and they have a powerful team supervisor. He directly give out the idea-- smart kitchenware(which we will give some details later) ,some of the team member come uo with other idea like smart dish-washer, smart range hood and smart tap, etc. however,to follow the principle, supervisor have to give to negative aspect of a good idea, the smart tap become the result though smart range hood may be better, but because tap is easy to find disadvantage,it become the final result. And another problem we found is team member don't have chance to meet the company's management layer, when we thought about this, we don't have too much enthusiasm, and the final product may have some disadvantage by our group rules-- everyone should say something after permission.
And later when we simulate EX. A2, we reach to an agreement slower because  everyone in the group are willing to talk about their creative ideas, and we really have some amazing ideas but it is also occupied too much time. Our product seems to be much more perfect because everyone can contribute their thoughts at once. Everyone have the opportunity to show themselves in front of the management layer, everyone has the passion to do it.
A1 30s outline:
1.      Supervisor give out the result of choosing smart tap to be the next product.
2.      Provide the reason and prospects for development, both strength and weakness in brief.
3. Function: The tap, with the timer, and a reader, that can read the quantity that the currently water flow, and can control

A2 60s outline:
1.      Leader give out the result of choosing smart range hood to be the next product, and praise his teammate and invite them to provide some further information.
2.      Member1 present their idea of the product and advantage in technique and market.
3.      Member 2 present the weakness and the optimization of their product.

After exercise, we make a short summary that the scenario 1 we call it power centralized team, and scenario 2 we call it equal team because in A1 the supervisor have all the power just like he is the king and A2 seems all member have the same rights and duties. we also find these rules will inhibit our product development process
A1:
1.      Team member is no allow to talk without permission.
Because the inspiration is easy to come and easier to disappear. if we cannot share it at once, we may forget.
2.      To trust your leader: team member’s idea should check with supervisor first and supervisor instruct others with his/her opinion.
In this way, some idea may not be known by others because supervisor do not like it, even it is actually awesome.
Actually the leader facts is a key point to win, due to the Decision-maker factors by Robert F[1]. Hurley. The team member should trust the decision maker and the decision maker should have a well result of a complex mix of personality, culture, and experience to be believed.
A good team leader can judge the consequence of a battle.

3.      NO LAUGH.
That is incomprehensible. Laugh can active the circumstances. Make the team harmonious and more creative. We cannot even imagine a work place without smile.
And we also find something may facilitate the development process
4.      The right team leader
.in this A1 that had a high levels of the collaborative behavior and a better efficiency due to the effort to the leader who clearly made a significant difference.
We can tell that the leader in A1 were both leader who are task-and relationship-oriented which fit the rules of the 8 ways to collaborate---right team leader.

A2:
1.      another way to trust :Free talk environment,
That means everybody can show their idea and talk to others to find a better solution. we think it can stimulate new and creative idea come out .but of course it cannot disturb others.
This is another way to present Trust, is a same-level trust by each group member, which can be called Managing with the Trust Model[1],by using this model, one can found it easier to place his/her faith in others ,such as one can      use this trust to identify what he/she could change one’s feeling according to the example by Sue and Joe[1].
Nobody will be blame by their strange ideas.
That encourage team member come up with more ideas .some wonderful idea cannot hit the world may just because the owner is too shy.
2.      No leader, no role clarity and task ambiguity.
Everyone talks as will means No role clarity and task ambiguity, that is not a good collaborative team which we can tell through 8 ways to build collaborative team[2],which says should be the most important promoting collaboration. A clear define and role play can bring you to the success, instead, proceeding a project with such kind of anarchy will definitely slow down the whole procedure, that is what we have discussed above in our ‘drama’ that A2 has a slower procedure and effectiveness though a better idea.

3.      Team collectively show their result.
That is an affirmation and encouragement to the effort every team member did. And it will obviously prove the group cohesiveness.
According to the analysis above, we think the equal team can done better in this case.
On the other side, it can also bring mess to your team due to the different skills on presentation. A better team will always make the member to feel their effort and give a nice presentation as well
4.      Pixar’s Operating principles works
Indeed, we came out with a better idea in A2 though it take us a longer time to create it.
We must stay close to innovations happening in the academic community[3],A2 did give us a way to put our self into a freedom atmosphere where ‘magic’ happens, tech tools+art=magic. A better idea than A1, though, here is not such kind of team work display in A1.
That is the power to creative, we believe that the creative perspective comes from the brain storm by each individual person instead of the executives department nor does the development department. [3]

  1. I think this blog is somehow a little bit short in length. Though the content had mentioned all about trust, creativity and team collaboration, the analysis is a bit not deep enough. I appreciate the pitch outline. This shows that this group is very serious on the role play some they can developed such a detailed draft. The diagram is interesting and professional. Regarding the analysis, I think if there are more interrelation is shown between trust and creativity or trust and team collaboration, the content will be more informative. I think the group focused on their discussion process and did not analyse deeply on the relationship between trust, creativity and team work. In the analysis of exercise A1 point 4 The Right Team Leader, I think the group can elaborate more on it as I don't quite understand what is the main point of this paragraph. For example, can we talk more on the 8 ways to collaborate? As this "8 ways" were not mentioned in the blog, I have a feel that this paragraph is incomplete and not yet finished. I think it is a pity of the blog since I believe this idea of "the right team leader" can help to elaborate the group context of exercise A1. More in-depth analysis of this point can make the group setting of having a leader to stand out. I think having the right team leader in exercise A1 is the key to success. And this also explains the situation in exercise A2 that a right team leader may lose his/her function in a team setting without leader and so will make the team setting dysfunction. A team leader who cannot lead but just equal status with other team members may even harmful to the group sine he/she may be uncomfortable and so hinder the trust and creativity. He/she may even refuse to cooperate with others. I think the exploration of this point will make the blog analysis more interesting.

  2. 1, There is a overall - separate structure in your article, which is helpful for me to read.
2, Between the lines indicated that each author of the article has a good engineering thinking. This kind of thinking made the article not be bound by theory, made the two scenarios so vivid and practical. So I can not help integrate into your scene settings.
3, You used comparison logic in the team cooperation analysis, which is very popular in our assignment 1. But I was not satisfied because the analysis of both are equal. I would also like to see some kind of depth analysis of articles of cooperation. For example, Is there any way to improve the efficiency of cooperation in Scenario 2?
4, Thank you for let me know the 8D Problem Solving Process. I found an article that easy to understand if anyone is interested.

  3. This blog definitely shows how you guys are enthusiastic about this project. It's interesting to read your drawings. But the only thing I am interested to know is do you guys think A1 or A2 is more productive? It seems to me that both of the exercises are good in some ways, bad in some ways, but without a clear comparison/conclusion. It would make it easier for us to read.

Last but not least, I am so inspired by your A2 outline, mentioning one member is responsible for the pros of the product, while the other is stick to the weakness. It's definitely a good method to inspire ideas, to think out of the box. People are often focusing on how to be better but seldom on how to accept and improve their weaknesses. Apart from this good method, we can also make use of some external sources, e.g. competitors, suppliers, etc. Like, asking comments/suggestions from customers and suppliers, as well as comparing our products with competitors'.

  4. Hi, group Elementary inspiration. I have read some other group's blogs. Most of them agreed that A2 are better and made a clear conclusion. But you guys tell me the good aspects of A1 and give me deep impression. I think the things that seem bad must have good aspects and the things that seem good must have disadvantages. I like your critical thinking.

  5. By reading this blog, I can tell that the chain of thought is a very typical example of people from the science / engineering background.

The presentation of the two professional diagrams that were developed based on your knowledge (which is quite unique in our class) has made this blog special among others and made it more interesting to read.

The layout of this blog has utilised the point form structure, which helps readers to move along with your findings. However, I find the data points a little bit too scattered and it is not as straight forward that readers cannot easily join up the dots. I believe that this is mainly due to your approach to express your thoughts along with your flow to the two exercises. It is more of a first person approach to get to the data for analysis.

As a suggestion, I would recommend that a conclusion part comes at the end of the blog to briefly summarise what has be uncovered during the discussion process. Comparing the data from Exercise A1 and A2 side by side could also help quick readers to grasp the essence of your findings too.

Overall, I enjoy reading this blog and have taken away a good example of how first hand unique information could help arouse readers' interest. Congratulations for giving birth to the two "babies". Perhaps you shall really consider about applying for a patent for them? :)

  6. When I first saw your pictures on the screen, my intuition told me “you guys are nerds”. By the way, I like nerds(理工男).
I know you guys worked hard for the blog. I can see that from your pictures. It’s just that you put your effort on wrong place. I think you guys have lots of great ideas on this topic. Just try to use more knowledge you learned from the class to elaborate your ideas.
I think imagination is your great power. Why don’t you use your imagination to further describe your cases? I remember you guys are very good at role playing and you can also add this part into your blog.
I do like the “laugh” part you analyzed in blog. I never thought about “laugh” could be a point as encouragement. I think it is a good point and that lightened me up.
Keep on fighting! You guys rock!

  7. Firstly, I like your layout of this blog for it seems very different comparing with others and you also make the blog so precise and understandable that way. Secondly, your blog has impressed me a lot not just because of the layout but also your well organized contents. You have categorized the main characteristics of two pitches followed by your analysis based on theories respectively. I think it would be better if you can work out a comparison or a overall conclusion about which pitch is more efficient.

  8. Hi, Elementary inspiration :) This is 53978673. Your work is very interesting! I think you should be scientists, so you could design so amazing kitchen products for people. You give a very detail description about how you design product in each scenario, and what happened in each scenarios, as well as what factors facilitate or inhabit you to create the products. However, I think your work could be better if you do more analysis rather than description. So we could have a much deeper understanding about what happened and why it is happened, and also conclude some experience to help us to have a good teamwork in the future. Anyway, I really like your work, you are very creative!

  9. Hi, spirit team, this is 53978673. You have a clear introduction about the finial presentation of your products. But I think you could introduce more about the process of your discussion when you develop these two products. What happened? How was it happened? So I could understand why you have no trust between each other in the second scenario, which is totally different from what happened in my team ( We have more trust between each other because we can express our idea equally and freely when we do the second exercise )

And from my perspective, you may misunderstand about the topic. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have supervisor when you do the second exercise. In each exercise, we have supervisor. In the first exercise, the supervisor controls the conversation, and decide who can talk, and give negative feedback to the teammates; in the second exercise, the supervisor encourage teammates to talk about their ideas equally and freely.

For the analysis, I will recommend you talk more about the relationship between trust, creativity, teamwork and collaboration.
However, don’t be frustrated. You have some place impress me also. Like the theory
“Trust= (credibility+reliablity+intimacy)/self-interest (David, Charles, Robert ,2000). This theory gives me inspiration that I should pay attention to the “self-interest” if I wanna encourage my team to do a good job in the future. So ,thanks for your guys!

  10. Hi this is 53820292. After reading some other blogs, I think your group article is coherent, and your team created clearer lines of product background, outlines and analysis of the rules. This make me more easier to understand your team's opinions, good job! And I also like your group's product drawings, these images are vivid and lively to show up the pitch. Nevertheless, I'm a bit confused about what you mentioned at the A2's analysis part. In the 1st point, you said, "some wonderful idea cannot hit the world may just because the owner is too shy." I don't know why you use "shy" here? What's your argument to use this word? If I can come up with a wonderful idea, I don't think I would feel shy to present the idea, everyone knows that it's not easy to think a new and wonderful idea. And you also quoted the example by Sue and Joe---"Nobody will be blame by their strange ideas." and assumed that it's a free talk environment. So I don't know why you think the owner is too shy to present his/her idea. Anyway, this is a good articles, and thanks your point of view!

  11. Your blog is easy to read as written in point forms, so basically I enjoy reading very much.

In your role play exercise, different from other groups, you guys really innovate a new product, and it is fun to see your drawings and ideas. I can really feel your group's passion.

However, I cannot see your conclusion, comments and recommendations on it. It seems that both A1 & A1 have good & bad sides, which you have written in the analysis. So which one is better? Or in which situation we should adopt? It would be much better if I can know your conclusions. Nice work anyway, keep it up!
